SHELBURNE FALLS, MA -- Amherst artist Petula Bloomfield says: “For me, painting is a celebration of energy and color.” One look at the work in Bloomfield’s new featured exhibit at Salmon Falls Gallery, and you wouldn’t refute this painter’s statement.

Working very slowly, using multiple layers of paint, Bloomfield paints with acrylics or oil on paper then mounting her work on panels. These layers reveal both the transparent and opaque nature of being human.

Bloomfield’s Stream of Consciousness transports you to a world where intuition is in the driver’s seat. Dream-like spaces invite the viewer along on the artist’s inner journey. Little is provided by Bloomfield in the way of explaining her boldly patterned and brightly colored world. She wants to favor the opinion of the viewer. Bloomfield is “more intrigued to know how a viewer might see the painting rather than to offer any statement of intent. My hope is that you enjoy what you see.”

Petula Bloomfield has been a professional artist since 1990. She is the recipient of a Surdna Arts Teacher Fellowship from the Surdna Foundation in New York (2011) and an Artists Resource Trust Grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation (2012). She has a Master of Science in Art from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Clark University, Worcester. She has taught Visual Art at the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School in South Hadley since 2004, and has completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Castello di Spannocchia, Tuscany, and Norristown, PA.  Petula's work was commissioned as a permanent installation for the entrance lobby in the new Sunderland Public Library, Sunderland, MA. Recent shows include Things That Die Interestingly, 2014, APE Gallery Northampton, MA, Take A Seat, 2016, University Museum of Contemporary Art, Amherst, MA, Seeing Ourselves: Self Portraits by 50 Women Artists, 2017, APE Gallery, Northampton, MA.
