- Born in London, now based in New York, Rupert Wates has made songwriting the focus of his life since he signed a publishing deal with Eaton Music. He came to the USA in 2006, and in 2007 alone he has received ten songwriting awards including Gold Prize in the Folk/Acoustic category, and Second Prize overall, in the 24th Midatlantic Song Contest in Virginia, and Second Prize in the 10th North Carolina Songwriting Contest in Holly Springs. His latest CD, “Coast To Coast”, was recorded in Tacoma, Washington, and was named ‘Album of the Month’ for October 2007 by Britsound Radio in New Jersey. A review by Rob Quicke of Britsound declared that the album is ‘a delight to listen to. These are songs crafted with care and imbued with sincerity and conviction...This is an album to be savored, not rushed.’ In the Wisconsin journal The Badger Herald, reviewer Michael Merline spoke of the album’s ‘complex storytelling’ and ‘classy melodic sensibility’. As of November 2007 “Coast To Coast” has been on medium to light rotation on more than 160 local college radio stations across America, and Wates has given two live interviews and performances for WPSC radio at 88.7 FM in Wayne, New Jersey, which were transmitted to stations in the USA and the UK. In 2007 Wates has played live shows in Washington state, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, Idaho, North Carolina, Virginia, Baltimore, Connecticut and New York. Whatever the venue, audiences respond to his brand of acoustic, melodic pop. - Sue Burkhart and Ed Vadas have joined together to form a duo dedicated to performing a variety of tunes they have always loved, but didn‘t fit into their working repertoires. This new repertoire is so varied that when they are asked to describe the type of music they play, their usual comeback was "a sort of Americana." While accurate, it sounded corny to them. So... they decided to add a bit of spice and alter it to "Ameri-MF-cana" which more typifies their slightly twisted humor and repartee. Because the tunes often embrace the male/female situation, they thought MF would be just right. They hope that, by only playing songs they love, from whatever genre, they will play with fire and exuberance, and if they play them well, they will laugh and have fun... and that will carry over to the audience! So far the concept has worked. From the Ledbelly tune "Poor Howard", Dylan’s "I’ll be your baby tonight!", Duke Ellington’s "Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me" to Merle Haggard’s "Today I Started Loving you again!", Tom Wait’s "Jersy Girl", and the old Stringband favorite "Who Broke the Lock on the Henhouse Door". people have embraced the duos eclectic approach. There are other styles included...a couple of jazz scat tunes a la Lambert, Hendrix and Ross, an anti drug tune by Afro man, a number of original tunes penned by Sue or Ed, a smattering of bluegrass, and traditional folk, all drenched in a rich slathering sauce of blues! A deep love of roots music drove them to learn the varied styles and be able to play and sing them with feeling they deserve. Reading their personal bios will reveal how they can traverse these many genres and still be "authentic". Between Sue’s command of the jazz and classical guitar and her doubling on the mandolin and Ed’s mastery of the old blues and finger-picking guitar styles and his harmonica skills, the two explode on stage with a grand musical excitement. Both musicians sing somewhere on most every song, often employing a sort of "blues" or "red neck" harmony. Still, on other tunes they get "downright pretty"! And that is the half of it! The other side of "Ameri-MF-cana" is the way the personalities collide on stage... both Sue and Ed have no problem saying anything that pops into their mind.... they have been known to find something funny and just laugh uncontrollably for what seems minutes before they can continue. They don’t really want to advertise that they are funny, but given the opportunity, it gets "fair to partly funny" sometime in most every unplanned outing. Admission is free! - Marc Douglas Berardo is a rising star on the national singer songwriter scene. In 2006 alone, he was recognized with several major song awards including The Telluride Troubadour Contest (CO), Rocky Mountain Folks Festival (CO), Suwannee Springfest Song Contest (FL), and the Wildflower Arts Festival (TX) and The Just Plain Folks Award (CA). Berardo has shared the stage with some of the best in acoustic music including The Buffalo Springfield, Guy Clark, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Peter Rowan (Old and in the Way), Eric Anderson and Steve Forbert. On stage on average of 150 nights a year, Berardo can be seen in rooms like the The Towne Crier Cafe and Bitter End in New York, the Trade Winds Cantina in Florida and even St Anne’s Chapel in Vatican City, Italy. He does this "simply and well" with what Rambles Cultural Magazine calls: "careful images and great tunes." In April of 2006, Munga Music issued Marc’s fourth CD entitled "Harbor". The CD reached 25 on the Folk DJ Radio Chart in the US and Europe, tied with a trio of legendary names: Jackson Browne, Pete Seeger and Rodney Crowell. He recently signed a publishing deal with 19 Entertainment, the management & publishing arm of American Idol. - Frank Critelli writes songs. He dabbles in haiku and other short poetry. Sometimes he writes other stuff too. Like postcards. His songs are available on compact disc and for download at Independisc Music Club (see link below) and other places like CD Baby. You can read more about his music at his website (see link above). Frank Critelli often performs live. Sometimes he performs solo, and sometimes he is accompanied by "The Don" Horton on bass guitar and Rich "Southbound" Suarez on the drums. Over the years he’s played in coffeehouses and bars, street corners and subway stations, colleges and festivals, the occasional theater, and (most recently) in his kitchen. Frank Critelli likes other independent songwriters too, and he hosts a monthly live music series at at used bookstore in Hamden, CT. The bookstore is called Books & Company. The series is called Songs From The Sofa, and it started in June, 2002. That’s a long time ago. The songwriters are great, and the audience is cool. It’s a pretty good time. Admission is free!
