- Completing my master’s degree in violin performance at the Peabody Institute of Music was not easy,” says Baltimore singer/songwriter Cameron Blake, who suffered an extreme case of conservatory burnout half-way through his first semester of graduate school. However, it led him to discover his gift as a songwriter where he found freedom in developing an artistic technique of expression rather than ‘note-perfection.’ Influenced by Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Nina Simone, mewithoutYou and The National, Cameron’s music is a healthy blend of folk, classical, and indie rock. His often Irish sounding voice and powerful performances have been described as “straight-up charisma,” while his classical music training is most evident in his rich and varied instrumental arrangements. Like Bob Dylan and Derek Webb, Cameron’s lyrics are full of storytelling, politics, and spirituality that represent an artist immersed in modern poetry and the folk tradition. In the past year, this unique combination of charisma and artistry has enabled him to develop a strong local fan base in Baltimore, tour throughout Michigan, and perform overseas in Paris, France. - Chuck E. Costa is a fresh voice delivering an interesting mix of unique, intimate and honest songs. He draws on a range of influences creating music unfettered by time or place, defying common labels like "folk-pop." Chuck’s songwriting explores subtle yet significant themes with the tacit goal of challenging his audiences to think (or re-think) about what may often be taken for granted and his honest enthusiasm continually permeates audiences at each live performance. His powerful and sincere vocals (comparisons range from Jonathan Edwards to Michael Stipe) and acoustic guitar delivery seamlessly complement the lyrical content of the songs. Chuck’s songwriting and performance skills have received national recognition from several festivals this year. Chuck was raised in New York City, part of an Italian family with a mother from Norway, which may be partly responsible for the creative breadth of Chuck’s musical expression. After receiving a degree in philosophy from the University of Colorado and studying with poet Lorna Dee Cervantes, Chuck left Colorado to play music in the Northeast. He has shared the stage with such diverse nationally touring acts as; The Weepies, Pete Seeger, The Samples, Andrew Bird, Grey Eyed Glances, October Project to name a few. Chuck has released three albums to date including his latest "Where the Songs Come From." Costa recorded this latest collection at Signature Sounds Studio (Pomfret CT) with production help from Mark Thayer and a top notch band.Ê The results serve the songs and capture Costa’s strengths. Chuck’s song "Able" was chosen as a "first-five" semi-finalist in the Newsong Contest, part of the prestigious Mountain Stage Newsong Festival(2004) and was recently featured on NPR’s "All Songs Considered" open mic. Chuck was a finalist in the Solarfest (VT) singer/songwriter showcase (2004) He was a finalist in the Great Waters Folk Festival (NH) songwriting competition (2005) an honorable mention in the Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour Contest (2005) . Chuck’s song "When the City Comes" from his latest release was recently chosen to be part of a compilation CD to be released by HEAR Music in April and featured in every STARBUCKS location in North America! - “Resembling a Joss Stone-meets-Joni Mitchell vocal style" and "...Pearlman creates a more instrumentally varied record than might be expected from a singer-songwriter.” Melanie Wolfson - The Acquarian Katie is a singer/songwriter/drummer/guitarist and as you can see, at this point, Katie is exploring all of the possibilities of playing her music. She sees herself as leading her band vocally and musically from behind the drum kit, but also has been exploring coming out from behind the kit and fronting the band with her acoustic guitar. With Katie, things never stay in one place, they are always reinventing themselves (even this bio!), so the one thing to be sure of is that the vision of the future is and will be a work in progress. What seems to be a recurring theme with Katie, though, is her inner search for truth and understanding of herself and the world she’s part of. This search is now being explored through writing and performing music as well as looking to find her place and voice in the musical world and the world at large. These searches are evident if you listen to her songs. The lyrical and emotional content tend to resonate within many people, and her growing audience seems to find reflections of their own searching and struggles in her work. As Katie has become aware of the connections she’s making with these former strangers, now kindred spirits as well as fans, she has become more inspired to perform her music, feeling that if her performance reaches but one person, it has been worth the effort. It’s exciting and magical! Moonlight Magic takes over Shelburne Falls to start the holiday shopping season on Friday, November 28, 2008 from 4:30 - 10:00 PM.
Moonlight Magic is a community tradition held annually on the Friday after Thanksgiving coinciding with the annual “Holiday Lighting of the Village.”
Many special features add to the traditional festive evening of family fun and holiday spirit in this classic New England village on the Mohawk Trail. Stores, galleries and restaurants stay open late for special holiday promotions. The streets are filled with caroling, sidewalk sales, art events and craft demonstrations. There will be vendor tables along the sidewalks with local non-profit groups holiday wreaths, baked goods and crafts. Live music and roving performers will be present on both sides of the river throughout the evening.
Mole Hollow Candle Company, a local candle company, provides 1500 luminary candles to line the village streets and sidewalks. The town lights up about 4:45 pm with the help of many volunteers. Bridge Street, the main thoroughfare, will become a pedestrian walkway to allow space for street performers and holiday strollers.
Santa will arrive about 4:45 PM on Deerfield Avenue and will be serenaded to his workshop at the Shelburne Senior Center. Children will be greeted at Santa’s Workshop for the first part of the evening.
Cartoons will be shown on the big screen in the Memorial Hall Theater.
Singing and instrumental groups will perform about town.
There will be family fun and children’s activities such as cookie decorating, ornament making, and candle dipping. Knights in armor will greet people at Wandering Moon. Many of the village merchants will have in-store promotions and specials. Shelburne Falls is a great place to find one-of-a-kind and hand-made gift items.
The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum will be open. This will be a rare opportunity to ride the brightly lit and beautifully restored Trolley No. 10 after dark.
At the Shelburne Senior Center there will be a craft sale and the Mountain Lodge A. F. & A. M.’s will offer soups and other items from their kitchen. Around the corner at the Village Information Center, Shelburne Falls Women’s Club will hold their annual Cookie Shoppe. The Friends of Arms Library will be holding their annual holiday book sale. Craft fairs will be held in the Eagles Hall and at the VFW. Many other private and non-profit groups will be offering items at sidewalk sales throughout the village.
The Hallmark Institute of Photography students work created in Shelburne Falls earlier this year titled “Color and Awareness” will be on exhibit at the Arms Library.
The Village Information Center, open throughout the evening, will provide accessible public restrooms.
This year there will be a Village Decorating contest for the best residential and the best business decorations. Residents must register with the SFABA by calling the office to ensure their address will be included on the voting list.
Shelburne Falls Area Business Association sponsors Moonlight Magic. Interested parties for vending and or businesses wishing to list special promotions on the Moonlight Magic Program are asked to contact the SFABA at 625-2526.

- Pirate ships, rail yards, skee ball machines, black berry brandy, & the Coney Island boardwalk—these are just some of the sights, sounds, & smells found in the dimly lit thoroughfares of Dreamland, a live EP and the latest effort by Jason Myles Goss. Whereas his last full-length album, Another Ghost, found him rummaging through black-and-white photographs and singing about the uncertainties of the future, Dreamland offers 5 new songs (as well as 2 live versions of songs from Another Ghost) that are more fantastical, vivid, and bare-bones in their delivery. “When I moved from Cambridge, MA, to Brooklyn, NY, I began writing incessantly, scribbling things in a notepad without regard to where they would end up. The landscapes of the songs were more distinctive, the characters more idiosyncratic and colorful. I was having fun piecing everything together, without worrying as much how these stories related to me directly.” As the title suggests, these songs evoke a feeling of somewhere else—the ballroom of a seaside hotel, a bus station in Meridian, Mississippi, or a dingy car on the Coney Island Wonder Wheel. They are a departure from the more introspective, diary-oriented songwriting of some of his previous songs. These personal perspectives are not absent in these songs, however, they are often woven in through the characters themselves. “Dreamland is a stepping-stone to a future album; these are not polished studio tracks, there are no smoke and mirrors, but the feeling is right. Throughout you can hear the bar staff washing glasses, shouts from the crowd braving the late hour; I can’t think of a better place for these songs to live.” Dreamland was recorded live at midnight in Cambridge, MA, on August 2, 2008, at the Lizard Lounge with the exception of “Mother To The Moon,” the final track, which was recorded live at Boston’s WERS 88.9 FM. Dreamland also features Zack Hickman (Josh Ritter, Lori Mckenna, Jake Armerding) on upright bass and backing vocals and Austin Nevins (Josh Ritter, Anais Mitchell, Jess Klein) on electric guitar and lap steel. Dreamland has continued to receive critical acclaim earning Jason spots at premier venues such as Club Passim (MA), the Tin Angel (PA), the Living Room (NYC), & the Stone Church (NH), to name a few. - Kristin Hoffmann is a singer/songwriter based in New York City. She began playing classical piano at the age of four, and never stopped, picking up opera and guitar as a teenager and going on to study at Juilliard Pre-College. After Juilliard, Kristin attended NYU for a year, and began a long run of playing her own music out at many New York City venues, such as The Living Room, The Knitting Factory, and Joe’s Pub. After a brief signing with Capital Records, Kristin co-produced, engineered, and self released a record entitled, "Divided Heart," and went on to sell over 3000 copies as she continued to build a loyal local following. She discovered the intimate, Caffe Vivaldi, in the West Village where she began playing on a regular basis, honing her skills as a musician and writer. It was there that she was discovered by Interscope Records, and went on to record her latest record, "Real," with notable producer, David Bottrill ( Peter Gabriel, Tool). Following the recording of "Real," Kristin spent time touring with acts such as, The Wallflowers, Tina Dico, Dar Williams, Brandi Carlile, Howie Day, and Ben Lee. Kristin uses her piano as a vehicle for her voice, keeping her instrumentation simple, so the gorgeous melodies and lyrics resonate with the audience. "I hope to stimulate my listeners to go deeper within themselves to places they may be reluctant to go. I’ve come to realize that my greatest challenges have emerged from my mistakes, and that they were really blessings in disguise." Most recently, Kristin has finished writing, producing, and performing her 30th song for "Songs of Love," an organization that matches musicians with ill children to create songs just for them. "Working with ’Songs of Love,’ has been one of the most meaningful ways I could have ever imagined using my musical skills. The joy from each child when they receive their song is un-measurable, and I am so glad that I am able to be a part of their healing process." Kristin is also currently practicing musical healing, her own style which she calls "SOLAUM"(Songs of Light + aum…the eternal resonance of the universe), with individuals and groups and plans to expand this practice over the coming years. - Come join our informal gathering of local musicians coming to our place Sunday mornings to play Celtic music. It’s part educational, part performance, mostly just fun. If you are interested you are more than welcome to join in or just listen. Shelburne Falls resident Ted Cahill kindly oversees the proceedings. Admission is free. - It's back for the 13th Annual Shelburne Falls TubaChristmas. Bundle up as the concert is outside on Bridge St., in front of Memorial Hall. If the weather is unfavorable, the concert will be held at Trinity Church. Sing happily as the low brass players perform at Shelburne Falls' first holiday concert of the season!
